February Update

Hello everyone! I just got back from Costa Rica. Here’s what happened.

I spent my first 2 weeks in San Jose with Gap D. We partnered with “Project Hope” here is there website if you wanna check them out https://www.tilhereturns.com/ They do so many things at there community center. We taught English to some young adults. I also got to teach Spanish to the Gap squad. We did dance ministry, where we learned how to dance different dance styles. One of our guy’s even taught a class! We learned to walk in more freedom through dancing. I think dancing is one of the most vulnerable things we do. But since I know my God calls me free, I can dance without fear or shame. We did street ministry, where we just spent time on the streets talking with people. This is one of my favorite things to do. I have another blog about that, you can check the link at the bottom.

My focus is the men of the squad. After spending a few days with them, I noticed they were struggling with choosing one another. Something the Lord has taught me is James 4:14. We just don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow. We are definitely not guaranteed tomorrow either. That’s a perspective I always want to live and share with others. I really challenged the men not waste to time. This was already month 6 of their 9 month trip. Not sharing the hard stuff and holding back how they really feel was just a waste of time. These guys have lived together for 6 months now. It was time to love each other at a deeper level. And praise God! Because that’s exactly what started happening. The guys got real with each other and started to open up and love one another. Seeing these men choose one another as brothers and friends was a huge win!

After San Jose, I joined up with Gap F. They were in Hone Creek. It’s on the east coast, and is very different from San Jose. There is a beach not too far away from where we stayed. (About 45min walk) We were working with YWAM (Youth with a Mission). They have a large property in the jungle. The ministry was to share the good news of Jesus to the locals and tourist’s. We would talk to people at the beach and local businesses. We did some soccer out reach too. We would take a big white bus to different towns and play soccer. After we played soccer we would share our stories of how God changed our lives. We also cleared out some of the jungle on there property. The YWAM staff wants to have a soccer field, church and some more living quarters on there property. So we went got to remove the overgrowth with machete’s! But Similarly to the men’s team in San Jose, the men of Gap F, didn’t choose each other. I would see one guy hanging out with the women. Another guy sitting in the same exact place every day. One guy isolating himself and the other kinda just everywhere. I was able to take the men off the YWAM base and just hang out together. I’ve learned that a squad with healthy men end up leading the women in the same. Once I got the men off base I had space and time to share where we could grow. Sometimes it just takes a little reset for us to get perspective. After our talk, they started to shift and get vulnerable with each other. They started to choose to be with one another instead of running to the women of the squad. I’m so blessed to be able to see a shift in only 2 weeks.

That pretty much wrapped up my time I’m Costa Rica. My goal was to get the men to choose each other. I loved that I was able to witness both groups love and choose each other more. I hope they continue to pursue one another and be real to each other.

Now I’m back in the States. I’m currently in Gallatin TN. I’ll leave here tomorrow and head West. Thank you all for your support! I love being able to share what God is doing with you. I hope to share even more in the future. Please email me if you have any prayer requests or questions. Love you guys!

  1. Thank you for calling light into the darkness Luis, you are made in the image of God.
Genesis 1:3-4 “And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.”

That is what you do Luis. You speak light into the world, and separate it from the darkness, and call the light good. I love you man, thank you for being an example of a man of God, and son of God.

  2. To Bro,
    You are a man on a mission . . . . really . . . . . ON MISSION!!
Can’t wait to see you in a few months.
